Enola Holmes 

is a detective movie series, not a web series. So far, only two movies have been released. Millie Bobby Brown plays Enola Holmes. She is the same actress from Stranger Things. The moment we hear the name Holmes, it is impossible not to think of Sherlock Holmes. That is because Enola is Sherlock’s younger sister. Likewise, Sherlock is Enola’s second older brother. Her eldest brother is Mycroft Holmes. He is a very strict person. He is not a detective but a government official. Because of him, Enola has to face many difficulties. Anyway, let’s see how the movies were.

According to the story, Enola grows up in a huge mansion like house under the care of her mother. She has never gone to school. Even if she had gone, the main lessons there would have been about how women should behave in society. They would teach things like how to dress, how to wear a hat, and how to eat properly in public. In other words, girls were taught from school how to live modestly and obediently in society. Reading and writing were taught too, but those were secondary subjects. The main focus was discipline and etiquette. But Enola never needed such a school because, after losing her husband, her mother trained Enola herself. She taught her how to fight, how to solve puzzles, and many practical life skills. After teaching her everything, her mother leaves a letter and suddenly disappears.

After that, the story becomes Enola’s search for her mother. When Mycroft Holmes and Sherlock Holmes return home from the city, they are shocked to see how Enola has been raised without attending school. Mycroft becomes furious and decides to send her to a boarding school. He even brings a headmistress to the house to take her there. Naturally, Enola hates the idea. Sherlock does not like it either, but he cannot openly oppose his older brother. Legally, Enola’s custody belongs to Mycroft, so he has the authority to decide how she should live and be educated.

Now the question is what will Enola do? Will she accept a school she hates? What is her plan? That is the main story of the first movie. Everything gets resolved within the first film itself. After that, Enola becomes a great detective, much like Sherlock. She escapes from home, avoids being sent away to school, saves a young nobleman, discovers who is trying to kill him, and proves herself as a brilliant detective. She becomes so good that even Sherlock is proud of her. Eventually, Sherlock takes custody of Enola away from Mycroft. That is how the first movie ends. Enola’s mother is played by Helena Bonham Carter, who previously played Sherlock’s love interest in another adaptation. Here, she plays Sherlock’s mother. Sherlock himself is played by Henry Cavill, who is famous for playing Superman.

Now let’s move to Enola Holmes 2. In the second movie, Enola is already a well known detective and takes on many cases. However, she mostly works for poor people. One day, a young girl comes to her asking for help in finding her missing sister. The missing woman is a dancer who also works in a match factory. She has been accused of stealing money from the factory and running away. Enola’s task is to find her and uncover the truth. At the same time, the romantic tension between Enola and the young nobleman from the first movie continues, moving between arguments and affection.

I have never read any Sherlock Holmes novels, comics, or original stories. Everything I know about Sherlock comes from movies and TV adaptations. So this review does not mean I know everything about Sherlock Holmes. As far as I know, the creator of Sherlock Holmes was Arthur Conan Doyle. I could still be wrong because I did not even Google it while writing this.

The third movie, Enola Holmes 3, is scheduled to be released on Netflix on June 1. It is not getting a theatrical release. From the trailer, it looks like Enola and her boyfriend may finally reach the point of marriage. But the trailer also shows something interesting. On her wedding day, Enola becomes a runaway bride because of a new case. The case? Someone kidnaps Sherlock Holmes himself. So she has no choice but to run off and find him. All of that is already shown in the trailer. I am eagerly waiting for the movie and plan to rewatch the first two films before it arrives.

Overall, everything is fine, but one thing in the second movie felt a little uncomfortable to me. The villain was portrayed as a Black character, while the main story revolves around white characters. Personally, that felt a little awkward. Other than that one issue, I thought the movie was quite enjoyable. Let’s see how the third movie turns out. See you in the next review.
