Taskaree: The Smuggler's Web
This is a Netflix web series that has many elements similar to the movie Ayan. When it comes to actors, except for Emraan Hashmi, who plays the Customs officer Arjun Meena, I didn't really recognize anyone else. But by the time you finish the series, you will remember many of the characters. Some of my personal favorites are also in that list. Okay, let's see what this series is all about.
According to the story, Mumbai airport is known for many kinds of smuggling activities. Honestly, I have never traveled through that route, so I don't know how true that is. I'm not sure if it's just for the story or if it's real. Since many foreign goods, drugs, and gold are smuggled through there without being caught, the government faces a loss of crores of rupees in revenue. To stop this, they appoint a sincere and energetic young officer. He forms a new team by bringing together several previously suspended Customs officers. Each of them is different, but what connects them is that they are all honest officers. That's actually why they were suspended before. Now that they are back in service, their maturity is greater than their speed. This could have been shown a little better, but it's not a big flaw. In every situation, the way the characters react keeps us guessing what will happen next. When a series makes us feel surprised or anxious about what will happen, it means it has succeeded. In that way, this series works well.
Emraan Hashmi, who plays Arjun Meena, is the hero. Some actors play the Customs officers in his team. Among them, four characters really stay in our minds. One of them is Gujjar, a Customs officer. Whether it is the emotional portions or the fight scenes, he performs powerfully, almost like he could easily overpower Imran's character. In fact, his role sometimes feels even stronger than the hero's, which might not have been expected.
Next is Mithali, a female Customs officer. Compared to Arjun Meena and Gujjar, Mithali jumps into action much faster. Her character could have been treated in a more special way. Instead, she feels like just one among many. At one point, they bring in a mother sentiment angle, but it feels underdeveloped and quickly forgotten. Still, it's not something that affects the series too much.
Then there is Chaudhary, who runs an entire smuggling syndicate. Interestingly, they are twins. But this twist doesn't really make much sense. The elder brother, who is bad, dies, and the younger brother, who was good, turns evil. Since both are named Chaudhary and look alike, no one knows they are twins. That twist is meant to be shocking and scary, but it feels overdramatic.
Next is Priya, an underground spy. She is the heroine of the series. It feels like most of the twists and important scenes are written mainly for her. She only misses the typical “mass hero” build-up scenes. Similar importance could have been given to Gujjar too. But instead, it feels like Gujjar was sidelined compared to Priya's beauty. Still, we can agree that Priya is beautiful.
I started watching this series because someone compared it to Ayan. But it doesn't even come close to Ayan. That's just how it is. Still, in its own way, it is decent. If the character of Chaudhary had been written more strongly and sharply, the story would have been even better. That's where it slightly fails. The build-up scenes they tried to create don't feel very impactful. To show how dangerous Chaudhary is, they show him killing someone brutally. I don't know why they chose a Myanmar character for that scene. They could have shown him killing an Indian instead. Even though the scene is violent, it doesn't really create fear. They probably wanted to make it look terrifying. Since the villain is shown as an international smuggler, they might have thought killing a foreigner would make sense.
That's all. Don't expect something huge. If you just want a time pass series, you can watch it.
